Hi everyone, I wanted to ask for some advice because I’m honestly at my wits’ end with my living room carpet. I’ve tried everything I can think of to keep it looking decent, but no matter what I do it always seems to look dull and grubby. We don’t even wear shoes in the house, yet somehow it still collects stains and marks. I keep hearing people talk about professional carpet cleaning as the ultimate solution, but I’ve never arranged it before and I’m not sure if it’s genuinely worth the investment or just one of those services that sounds better than it really is.

I’ve used all sorts of supermarket sprays and foams, and while they sometimes lift surface dirt, I feel like the deeper stains never really go away. For instance, we had a spilt glass of red wine months ago, and although it doesn’t look terrible now, there’s still a faint shadow on the fibres that catches my eye every time I walk past. Coffee stains are another nightmare – they seem to sink in and never truly come out. Do professionals actually manage to get rid of marks like that, or do they just make them a bit less noticeable?

I’ve read about steam cleaning, dry cleaning, hot water extraction and even shampooing, but I don’t know which method is best. Are they all equally effective, or does it depend on the type of carpet? Cost is another factor. I know that prices vary depending on the size of the room, but what’s a fair rate in the UK? I don’t want to be ripped off, but equally, I don’t want to go for the cheapest option and end up disappointed. Is it usually charged per room, per square metre, or just a flat fee for a visit?

I also wonder how often people do this. Is carpet cleaning something you’d book once a year, like spring cleaning, or do people have it done more regularly? Some of my friends say they do it every six months, but that sounds a bit excessive to me unless you’ve got pets or young children.

So my question really is: has anyone here had their carpets professionally cleaned, and was it worth the money? Did it actually make them look fresh again, or just slightly better for a short time?
